WATCH: Changes are coming to the SkyTrain as TransLink gets ready to open the Evergreen Line later this year. As Ted Chernecki reports, the biggest adjustment will be for people who are used to riding the Millennium Line to the downtown core – Sep 19, 2016

With the Evergreen Line launching before Christmas, TransLink is changing the operating pattern of the SkyTrain network early to give commuters time to get used to the modifications.

The changes will take effect on Oct.22. and will involve both Expo and Millennium Lines.

The Expo Line will now have two routes: one Expo Line train will continue to travel between Waterfront and King George stations, and the second train will run between Waterfront and Production Way-University stations.

The Millennium Line will have new start and end points. The line will no longer travel to and from Waterfront. Instead, it will run between VCC-Clark and Lougheed Town Centre stations, continuing on to the Evergreen Extension once it’s launched.

Once the Evergreen Extension opens, the Millennium Line will operate between VCC-Clark and Lafarge Lake – Douglas stations. Customers will have a one-seat ride between Lafarge Lake – Douglas and VCC-Clark – with no transfer required.

The Evergreen Line extension will add six new stations to the Millennium Line, which means 11 kilometres of additional tracks. The extension makes it the longest, driverless automated rapid rail network in the world.

“I don’t know how long that will last after this year, but it’s a nice point of pride for the Vancouver region and TransLink,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond.

The Evergreen line is now over 90 per cent complete, but the project was delayed by construction problems including multiple sink holes that popped up in the vicinity of the line, forcing street closures and concerns from neighbours.

The $1.43 billion, 11-kilometre line will link the neighbourhoods of Burnaby, Port Moody and Coquitlam to Vancouver. Translink estimates that when the line is operational, it will carry 70,000 passengers and remove 40,000 cars from the road every day by 2021.
