Honey the fire dog gets white-hatted at Working Dogs Day

They’re the top dogs in Calgary and the public got the chance to get up close and meet some of our canine heroes Saturday.

This city held its 3rd annual “Working Dogs Day” at Bowmont off-leash park.

Working dogs from 20 organizations around the province were on hand for the event that’s a part of the city’s Off-Leash Ambassador program, which started in 2013 to educate dog owners on responsible pet ownership.

The event featured demonstrations from working dogs and their handlers that included the Calgary Police Service, Calgary Fire Department, Animal & Bylaw Services, Calgary Search & Rescue Association, PADS Calgary (Pacific Assistance Dogs Society), PALS (Pet Access League Society) and Canada Border Services Agency.

A special white hat ceremony for Honey the fire dog also took place.

“Today is a big day to celebrate the role of dogs in our community. We’re celebrating the role of off-leash dog park ambassadors who help make our dog parks throughout the community – there’s 150 of them, work,” Mayor Naheed Nenshi said. “We’re also celebrating working dogs today. Dogs who assist people with disabilities, who assist with young people, who assist with our first responders and so, it’s a great day to just celebrate all things canine.”

Dog owners around the city also brought their own pooches, that were treated to a pet-i-cure.

Last year, more than 1000 dog owners and park users attended the event.
