The lawyers from Hummingbird, a law firm in Vaughan, are busy both in – and on the court – after Ida Mahmoudi, a summer intern at the firm, spearheaded a charity volleyball tournament called Court2Court.
“It is about raising awareness and promoting the relationship of firms within our community towards a common commitment towards mental health causes,” said Mahmoudi.
“The maintenance of mental health is just as important and just as serious as physical health.”
The hope of Court2Court organizers is to empower lawyers to better manage the high level of stress associated with practicing law.
“As you can imagine, it is quite stressful working in a fast paced environment like a law firm,” said Roy Bernhard, CEO of Hummingbird Lawyers LLP.
“Putting together a tournament that can help raise awareness for mental health was a fantastic idea and we jumped in with two feet.”
The tournament takes place Oct. 6 in North York with all proceeds going towards Partners for Mental Health.
“It is going to raise awareness and create programs around changing the way work places view and deal with stress and the resources available for stress, anxiety and depression,” said Bernhard.
“Honestly, we are going to be doing some pretty stringent practice,” said Mahmoudi.
“I am going to tell them that their weekends are going to be booked off for me and they are going to have to make those accommodations!”
