It’s a small farm in Naramata where visitors and school children have been coming for years to see how farm animals are raised. Andy’s Animal Acres Farm has been operating on a shoe-string budget but the owner says the place is in need of upgrades that she can’t afford. So, after a little arm-twisting from her friends and supporters, the owner is putting out a plea for a little help.
“My parents always said to me: when you grow up, you can have whatever animals you want and pay for their care and look after them. So here it is,” said owner Andy Buyan.
The only problem is Buyan can’t afford all the animals — and she has a lot of them.
Buyan owns about 70 chickens, a handful of lamas, horses, ponies, ducks and pigs, many of them rescues from people who didn’t want them anymore.
The bills are now adding up.
Part of the money raised will be spent on building proper winter shelters for the animals. So the next time someone decides to unload their pot belly pig, the animal will have somewhere warm to stay over the winter months.
