Police are considering charges following a dog attack in New Westminster.

Police say a man was walking a leashed dog near Dufferin Street on August 11 when they were attacked after coming across a couple with two unleashed dogs.

The owners then took the unleashed dogs away from the scene before police arrived.

The owner of the injured dog named Atticus said he is still traumatized by the attack, saying chunks of flesh were ripped out of his dog’s neck.

“If I had been a bystander, I have to be honest, I’d be hesitant to get involved in something that was as violent as that,” said Earl, the dog’s owner.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Earl’s neighbour Cam, who was walking Atticus at the time of the attack, suffered tendon damage that will likely require plastic surgery.

“His dog had my dog quite firmly by the neck,” Earl said. “Every time this owner tried to pull his dog back, you could see that both my neighbour…as well as my dog were being jerked back as well. His dog was not letting go.”

It took three people to pull the pregnant pit bull off Atticus and Cam. The animal’s jaws had to be pried open with an umbrella.

Earl said he would like to see the owners charged.

“These people demonstrated such a lack of responsibility,” he said.

Earl said he doesn’t understand why the pit bull hasn’t been apprehended.

New Westminster animal control officer Margie Fox said in a statement:

“We understand how serious it is. We are still collecting evidence. We don’t have the authority to seize a dog. We have to apply for a warrant. We have to do things legally.”

A source told Global News the dog’s owners are not cooperating with the investigation.
