Safety first when out on the water warns RCMP

FILE. Global News

Kelowna RCMP want  boaters to keep safety in the forefront this weekend.

Police say last weekend was a busy one on Okanagan Lake, as they had to respond to several incidents.

Last Saturday, August 13, a 38-foot Formula 400ss collided with another vessel docked at the Kelowna City Marina, then fled the scene.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Police managed to find the driver of the boat, and determined alcohol was involved.  The driver of the boat was charged under the Canada Shipping Act.

That Sunday, a swimmer sustained serious injuries when they were hit with a boat propeller.  RCMP say the boat operator started the boat and accidentally backed up into the swimmer.  Police believe inexperience may have been a contributing factor.

Later that day, RCMP responded to a report that a boat had nearly hit a child near the Sutherland park boat dock.

Police caught up with the vessel and discovered that again, the operator was affected by alcohol.  He was taken into custody when police realized he was violating parole conditions.
