Alberta RCMP confirm remains found in April belong to Brooks man missing since July 2015

Nearly four months after his remains were found and just over a year since he was reported missing, RCMP in Alberta have confirmed it was Mohamed Jama Abdi’s body found by a cattle farmer. Police continue to search for a man wanted in connection to his death and are again appealing for help in the case.

The discovery of human remains was made April 28 by a man tending his cattle in a field about 10 kilometres west of Brooks, Alta.

A Canada-wide arrest warrant for second-degree murder was issued on Aug. 13, 2015 for Ali Abdullahi Awale, a 40-year-old man who also used to live in Brooks.

RCMP said Thursday Abdi lived and worked in Brooks and had been on vacation in mid-July 2015. He was reported missing by a family member after failing to return to work. The case was deemed a homicide after an investigation led by the RCMP’s Major Crime Unit in Calgary.

Police said in 2015 they believe Awale left Brooks on a bus on July 16, 2015 and boarded a plane on July 23 from Toronto to Somalia.

Investigators are reiterating their appeal to the public for any information related to Awale.

“If your information leads to an arrest, you may qualify for a cash award up to $2,000,” police said in a release Thursday.
