OSHAWA, Ont. – Police in Oshawa, Ont., say they’ve charged two men with stealing $50,000 worth of batteries.
Police say they discovered the men had been stealing industrial batteries from neighbourhood utility boxes after a two month investigation.
They say most of the batteries are the size of car batteries – one is the size of a briefcase – and are used as a backup power supply.
Investigators say the two men would target a specific utility box, break into it, steal the batteries and then sell them for scrap metal.
They say they did this to 25 utility boxes in Durham region, east of Toronto.
They say 39-year-old Christopher Kyc and 19-year-old Logan Deon, both of Oshawa, are charged with theft.
