A Coquitlam family got a bit of a scare this week as a backyard black bear got a little too close for comfort.
Chris Renwick, who lives with his family and two young children on Burke Mountain, caught a close-up video of a black bear scouring their backyard for apples.
While eating breakfast, the family noticed a bear sitting by their backyard apple tree and enjoying a little breakfast of his own. Renwick grabbed his camera and started filming from their second-storey porch.
But after trying to shoo away the bear, it ended up coming right up to the bottom of their stairs, pushing the dad to send his kids back inside in a hurry.
“It was exciting there for a moment,” he said.
The family says they’ve seen this bear and others before, and all their neighbours have had similar run-ins.
“It’s almost a daily occurence now,” Renwick added.
Another Burke Mountain resident sent Global News a video of two young black bears playing in her backyard this week.
She says the two bears were accompanied by their mother, not pictured in the video below.
“We have seen them once before this season and I am assuming they were the same yearlings we saw last year,” says Pam Goessaert. “Now that the blueberries are finished along our little street, we will see more bears until winter.”
Goessaert says residents of her area have managed to live peacefully with their furry neighbours, partly because they are very conscientious about garbage.
