Kelowna parks to offer special beach wheelchairs

Two public beaches in Kelowna have just become more accessible to people who rely on wheelchairs for mobility.

Gyro Beach Park and Rotary Beach Park are now equipped with beach wheelchairs.

“Our waterfront is a spectacular asset and we want to make sure that everyone can access and enjoy the lake,” Ian Wilson, Park Services Manager said in a press release.

“The beach wheelchairs are much easier to navigate through sand than regular wheelchairs, allowing users to get right on the beach and even roll into the water.”

The specially designed wheelchairs have large, balloon like tires, and can actually float in the water.

Okanagan Beach Rentals will carry the chairs, and sign them out at no cost to those who need them.

There is one beach wheelchair at each site, and will be loaned out on a first come, first served basis.

Hours of operation are 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily, weather permitting.

“This is exciting news,” Louise Abbott, Executive Director of the Kelowna & District Society for People in Motion said in the release.

“The Society already has two beach wheelchairs that are lent out regularly and they have proved to be a very popular item. Individuals who need adaptive equipment will be delighted to know the additional beach chairs will provide further accessibility to two beaches in Kelowna.”
