Nova Scotia RCMP officer charged with sexual assault

The Nova Scotia RCMP have charged one of their own with sexual assault.

RCMP say a woman complained that an officer touched her in a sexual manner over her clothing in 1995. The information about the alleged assault came to light during the course of an unrelated investigation in July 2015.

Police say an officer met the woman “during the course of his duties as a police officer.”

Const. Charles Quartey, who has 24 years of service with the RCMP, has been charged. He was stationed at the Bridgetown detachment at the time of the alleged offence.

Quartey is currently posted in the Northwest Territories, where he has been since July 2014. He was placed on administrative leave in November 2015, and has been suspended since June 17.

RCMP say he will remain suspended until the criminal charges are resolved, at which his duties will be reviewed.

There are also two Code of Conduct investigations underway into Quartey’s conduct as an officer.

Quartey is expected in Kentville provincial court on September 27.
