Alberta company fined $140K in Saskatchewan workplace incident

An Alberta company has been fined after pleading guilty to violating Saskatchewan occupational health and safety regulations following a workplace incident.

On April 30, 2014, a man was working on a conveyor belt problem at Crop Production Services in Elstow, Sask., when his left hand got caught up in the machinery.

He ended up having his hand amputated.

Fertilizer was being unloaded at the time.

The Calgary-based company pleaded guilty in Saskatoon provincial court on July 20 for failing to provide an effective safeguard where a worker may contact a dangerous moving part of a machine.

The company was fined $100,000 for the violation along with a $40,000 surcharge.
