Tornado touches down in Manitoba as storm tears through province

WINNIPEG — A tornado touched down in Manitoba near Long Plain First nation and it appears to be moving east at 50 km/h according to Environment Canada.

A massive storm system moved through southeastern Saskatchewan and into Manitoba produced severe weather in much of southern Manitoba, including tornadoes.

Tornado warnings were issued just after 5 p.m. for much of southern Manitoba.

The Manitoba Weather Centre posted to its Facebook page:

Our thoughts and prayers lie with the communities of Long Plain First Nation and New Rosedale Colony tonight as they were “hit hard” by a tornado that ripped through there. Photo evidence was sent to us of roofs of homes damaged. We hope everyone is safe and we wish a fast rebuild. We hope everyone is safe and we wish a fast rebuild.

People in the area were posting images and videos of what they saw to social media. One Twitter video shows a tornado touching down between Souris and Reston.
