Police in Phoenix, Arizona have arrested a man after he was caught on camera slapping a woman in a wheelchair – in the middle of a live news report.
KPNX reporter Joe Dana was reporting live in downtown Phoenix on the sentencing of a child molester, when a man pushing a woman in a wheelchair entered the frame behind him.
As Dana wrapped up his live report, the man was seen slapping the woman.
According to KPNX, the newsroom was flooded with calls, emails, and social media posts wondering what was going on behind Dana during his live report, and asking if the woman was all right.
Phoenix police also said they received calls related to the on-air slapping.
Police followed up on the video and eventually arrested Randall Burgess, 60, for misdemeanor assault. Police told KPNX that the woman was largely incoherent when they interviewed her, and both of them showed signs of intoxication.
Court records show Burgess has a history of violent offences, and was placed on probation in 2015 after being charged with felony resisting arrest.
The woman, whose name is being withheld, was escorted back to her home by officers.
