WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be without prized free agent acquisition Weston Dressler for Friday’s game against the Calgary Stampeders.

The wide receiver hasn’t fully participated in practice after suffering an apparent head injury in Winnipeg’s season opening loss to the Montreal Alouettes. Dressler was forced out of the game in the first quarter by a helmet-to-helmet hit.

“He isn’t quite there,” said Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea. “If it was a home game, you maybe have another day. But because we’re travelling tomorrow, we have to make the decision now.”

Dressler missed most of training camp with a lower-body injury. He did make three catches for 22 yards against the Alouettes before getting injured.

Thomas Mayo is expected to start in Dressler’s place. The American has been practicing with the Bombers’ top offence all week. This week’s game in Calgary will mark Mayo’s CFL debut. The 26-year-old cracked Winnipeg’s roster after showing up at a try-out camp in Washington, DC

“He grows on you very quickly,” said O’Shea. “He seemed to pick up the playbook and understand things very quickly. He took it upon himself to know different positions and get that side of it figured out very quickly. You package that with his size, the shape he’s in and his speed. You like what you see.”

INCOMING INTERNATIONAL: The Bombers have added American linebacker Nick Temple to their practice roster. Temple participated in Montreal’s training camp earlier this month. He had 54 tackles, 2.5 sacks, an interception and four pass breakups in his senior season with the NCAA Division I’s Cincinnati Bearcats.
