Three-time Stanley Cup champion Mike Keane to be inducted into Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame

WINNIPEG – Former Manitoba Moose captain Mike Keane will be among the five athletes, two builders and two teams inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in November.

Keane won three Stanley Cups over his 16-year stint in the NHL. During that span, the Winnipegger scored 168 goals and 302 points in 1161 games. Keane finished his hockey career by playing five seasons with the Moose.

Also being inducted as athletes are former Winnipeg Blue Bomber Jim Heighton, sprinter Alanna (Yakiwchuk) Hinrichsen, five-time wheelchair basketball Paralympian Joey Johnson and swimmer Rhiannon Leier-Blacher.

Being added into the builder category are Dr. Cal Botterill and John Reilly.

Botterill is a world-renowned sport psychologist who has worked with athletes at ten Olympics, five NHL teams and several other competitors.

Reilly co-founded the Brandon Barbarians Rugby Football Club in 1981 and helped develop the sport in Western Manitoba.

The 1971-74 University of Winnipeg Wesmen men’s volleyball team and Bob Ursel’s 1985 World Junior Curling Championship winning squad will be inducted into the team category.

The 37th Annual Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony takes place November 5 in Winnipeg.
