Canada’s women’s soccer team defeated France 1-0 to take home the bronze medal on Thursday.
The game’s only goal was scored by Diana Matheson in the 92nd minute of play. France had massively outshot the Canadian team throughout the game, with 25 shots to Canada’s four, and four shots on goal to Canada’s one. France dominated the second half and nearly went ahead in the 61st minute when striker Gaetane Thiney’s shot hit a post.
But Matheson scored when it counted for the Canadian victory.
France entered the game having outscored Canada 6-0 in their previous two meetings, including a 4-0 win at the Women’s World Cup. The result gives Canada its first Summer Games medal in a traditional team sport since 1936.
The Canadian soccer team had seen some controversy during the Olympics, after losing to the United States in the semifinals. FIFA is investigating remarks made by the team’s captain, Christine Sinclair, and others who criticized the refereeing in that game.
