EDMONTON – Fort Saskatchewan RCMP believe drugs and speed are factors in a fatal two-vehicle collision in the community northeast of Edmonton Friday night.

Officers were called to the crash on Highway 15 near 94 Street at around 9:50 p.m. Friday.

Witnesses told police a Mercedes C 240 was speeding westbound on Highway 15 when it ran into the back of a Mazda SUV, which was also heading west.

A 43-year-old woman driving the SUV was taken to hospital where she died of her injuries.

A 47-year-old man driving the Mercedes was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. He was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

It’s been a deadly start to the May long weekend in the Capital Region. A cyclist was killed Friday evening after colliding with a car on Highway 14 just east of Highway 216, east of Edmonton.

Also Friday, a 35-year-old woman was killed in a fiery two-vehicle collision south of Edmonton.

RCMP officers will be out in full force on Alberta highways throughout the long weekend. Cst. Andrew Gildart with Strathcona County RCMP Traffic Services said unfortunately, some drivers continue to disobey the rules of the road.

“We just want people to slow down, buckle up, put the cellphones away and don’t drink and drive. Pretty basic rules, but those are pretty major on highways,” Gildart said.

“It’s very discouraging to me to see people out on the roads still not abiding by the rules.”

On Thursday, officers said Alberta had already recorded 17 traffic fatalities in RCMP jurisdictions this month.
