In the world of professional sports it’s the NHL, CFL, NBA, MLS, MLB and NLL that carry considerable weight for all of us. In reality, the only three letters that matter and mean the most are these: M-O-M. Mom.

All of our moms are the real MVPs. The moment they give birth to us they instantly become life’s most valuable player. Day in and day out they put in the ultimate shift. Every day raising us through infancy, childhood, teenage and even our adult years is a Game 7 for them.

Do they get standing ovations on a nightly basis? No, but they should.

Are they named in the “Three-Star” selection? No, but they should — and all three stars to boot.

Think of all those countless moments your mom has been there for you. And they are countless because moms never take a shift off. Figure skating lessons, dance recitals, hockey, softball or soccer practice. Mom was always and is always there making sure we’re prepared. Breakfast, lunches, dinners, just a mini-pit stop for mom who is always fueling us physically and mentally.

Moms are always there yelling words of encouragement and support. When mom’s voice becomes hoarse from all that yelling, she beams a smile that proudly tells us everything we need to know. No words necessary. That’s because mom’s love has more meaning than any trophy, plaque, medal or participation ribbon. Oh sure, those are nice mementos, but it’s what’s in our heart and soul that leaves the lasting impression and that’s mom.

I treasure my mom. I’m sure you’ve heard me mention Baba Mary. My mom is the strongest woman I know and not just because she had to deal with me. And trust me, I was a handful.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Baba Mary has dealt with the ultimate pain — first losing a husband, then losing her only daughter a little over a month ago. Yet through it all, as painful as it is, mom keeps being mom because that’s what mothers do. Think of what your mom has survived, think of the struggles she has conquered. Moms are life’s ultimate leaders. They’re your family’s team captain.

I also treasure those around me who are mothers. The wonderful woman I get to sit beside every weekend hasn’t stopped glowing since she became a mom. With all due respect to the Canucks, Lions, Whitecaps and all of the teams out there, the highlight of every weekend for me isn’t provided by them. It’s when Lynn Colliar shows me pictures or videos of what her daughter Teagan did this week. I’ve seen Teagan swim, I’ve seen her skate. I’ve heard her sing. But most importantly, I ‘m seeing her live thanks to everything her mom Lynn does on a daily basis. And I see that in all of my friends who are moms. That’s the secret of life that mom unveils to us day after day, month after month, year after year.

And that, to me, is what moms do. They teach us how to live and, just as importantly, how to experience life.

We as children have no idea the level of joy, drive, passion and commitment moms instill in all of us. We as adults, now that’s a different story. Now we know that it’s mom who is make us better as a son, daughter, colleague and friend. Impressive, isn’t it?

It’s why we celebrate mom today. It’s why we should celebrate moms every day.

So to all you moms and mothers-in-law out there: here’s to a day full of MVP chants. Each and every one of you are the best.

Love you moms. Love you, Manuela. Love you Baba Mary.

Happy Mother’s Day.
