SASKATOON – As Canadians hear the heartbreaking stories of evacuees fleeing the Fort McMurray wildfire, many are looking for how they can help. Its recommended to focus on monetary donations because many items could end up being wasted.
You also need to be wary of non sanctioned groups raising funds, while they may be well meaning there is no way to ensure your money gets where it is intended to go.

The Red Cross issued an emergency appeal for monetary donations to cover immediate food supplies and shelter costs for evacuees. Getting evacuees tended to, fed and with a roof over their heads is their primary priority.
After that, funding could help with community rebuilding. You can make a donation on the Red Cross website, call 1-800-418-1111 or text REDCROSS to 30333 to make a $5 donation.
You should always check with a centre as to what they need when donating physical items. Most shelters are not equipped to handle physical donations, and items could end up being wasted.

Social media has been playing a vital role in connected those in need with people looking to help. A community group on Facebook is appealing for emergency supplies that Fort McMurray residents may need. There you can connect directly with evacuees and their individual needs. Locals are encouraged to post at NEEDING while volunteers respond to their requests.
