REGINA – The Regina Police Service still have not made any arrests in the shooting that took place at the Pump RoadHouse early Friday morning.

However, the owner of the club is now speaking out and says he’s making improvements to the club’s security.

Mark Smith says he has been consulting with security experts on a plan to expand surveillance measures and add additional staff, but wouldn’t reveal all the details.

“We’re going to add more personnel strategically in the plan,” he said. “If you tell everyone what you’re doing for security then it won’t be secure.”

However, there’s no guarantee the new bouncers hired will actually have the knowledge and training to protect patrons because in Saskatchewan any security hired in-house isn’t provincially regulated.

“Folks that are employed by that establishment we don’t have any regulatory power of those individuals conducting that security,” Ministry of Policing and Corrections spokesperson Drew Wilby said.

It means that privately hired bouncers can be anyone without any certified training.

“It’s a wakeup call to the Saskatchewan government, they are behind the times,” security expert David Hyde said.

The province says they are reviewing security laws and while they do regulate private security firms and corporations, security experts say Saskatchewan should follow other province’s like Alberta and Ontario.

“They should regulate the whole industry and make sure there is mandatory training for bouncers,” Hyde added.

Smith says he plans to take a lead on the issue and have all his bouncers receive extra training.

“We want to set a precedence in the province,” he said.
