Maple Syrup brings crowd out to Kings Landing’s Sugar Bush Weekend

Although there were many activities going on at Kings Landing’s Sugar Bush Weekend, one sticks out above all else.

“We have a demonstration of candy on the snow and you have a chance to actually try it and taste the fresh candy,” says Programming Coordinator Pamela Gilbert of the weekend’s big attraction.

There was plenty of the sugary substance to go around, however producers say the last few years haven’t made it very easy on them.

“When you’ve got too much snow the sun doesn’t go to the roots,” says Claude Gosselin. “And this year we don’t have too much snow but we’ve got cold weather so we’re not winning on that one.”

“People are tired in the winter and they start to have fun and I think they have a craving for sugar.”

Haley Hickman is visiting from Australia and couldn’t believe her eyes when she arrived.

“I love it, it’s like a winter wonderland all the time,” she said. “And to see where maple [syrup] comes from – it made my day seriously.”

In addition to the maple candy demonstration and tasting there were horse carriage rides, live music and a pancake breakfast in the main hall.
