SASKATOON – Uber versus taxis; the debate over how to regulate them has been going full force across the country. In many cities, taxi drivers have staged numerous protests against the two tiers of regulations they are faced with.
On Tuesday, the City of Saskatoon’s transportation committee learned that the provincial government will not be creating special regulations for ride-sharing companies such as Uber, leaving it up to municipal government. Coun. Randy Donauer said he would support reducing taxi regulations alongside any move to allow Uber in Saskatoon.
As it stands right now, the current taxi bylaw means a potential Uber driver would have to pay for a traditional taxi licence in order to operate.
