New map lets you track Toronto’s snow-plow fleet, see when they last hit your street

City of Toronto/Screengrab

TORONTO — With winter snow returning, many residents may be looking out on their freshly dusted street or sidewalk and wondering just when city plows will show up.

A new city website launched Tuesday won’t tell you when relief is coming — but does let you see which roads and sidewalks have been cleared and salted, and when.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

For those curious as to the whereabouts of the city’s small army of 24/7 snow clearing equipment — more than 600 road plows, 200 salters and 300 sidewalk clearers — the site lets you follow the machines in real-time (like Pac-Man) as they travel about Toronto.

The page hones in on the GPS trackers on plows and salt trucks for their live location, while coloured lines on the map change depending on how long ago a street was plowed (from under four hours ago to more than a day).

If you’re wondering when your street will get cleared, the city says it can’t make predictions due to varying amounts of snow and potential route changes.
