WINNIPEG – Winnipeg homeowners could soon be shelling out for a new fee that would go towards organic waste collection, if the city approves the rollout.

Councillor Jeff Browaty tells Global News there are three different options, with costs ranging from $55 to $100 per year, per household. Browaty said doesn’t see the plan as something Winnipeg needs to implement right away.

“The cost per household per ton of waste is really high,” Browaty said. “In Winnipeg we have a city owned landfill which has over 100 years of capacity ahead of it. I don’t think this is a necessary step at all.”

This fee would add to the existing $50 charge for automated garbage pick-up Winnipeg homeowners already pay each year. Councillor Brian Mayes said this plan has been in discussion for over four years, and it’s time to get residents’ input.

“On the positive side, 40 per cent of household waste is compost, so that is a big potential to get it out of the landfill,” Mayes said. “On the other hand, the cost of picking it up could be pretty substantial.”

A council seminar took place Thursday morning about the future rollout of the curbside organic diversion program.

Public consultations are scheduled for later this month.
