Caretaker cottages in Vancouver parks could house Syrian refugees

The Vancouver Park Board hopes to soon learn whether some caretaker cottages in the city could be used to house Syrian refugees.

B.C. is in the process of receiving about 2,000 refugees from Syria, but with the extreme affordable housing challenges in Metro Vancouver, the suggestion is to use some of the cottages as transitional housing for some of them.

There are 71 such buildings in parks across Vancouver, and it’s believed three may have the basic requirements for migrants.

Now the board is just waiting for the results of a feasibility report from staff.

“We’re trying to just find any place they can live safely,” said Catherine Evans, Vancouver Park Board Commissioner.

“It’s so hard to find a safe place to live. This wouldn’t work for a large family, these are small lu nits, but it might be a safe option for somebody that would be able to afford it.”
