‘How-to deal with fraudsters’ advice issued from N.B. RCMP

New Brunswickers are constantly being berated by telephone scammers, and it’s got the RCMP giving residents a “How-To” for dealing with them.

In just the past month, RCMP have gotten more than 100 complaints from residents who have received calls from scammers claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), saying they’re overdue on tax payments.

Callers, speaking in foreign accents, are aggressive and often times tell residents they could be arrested if they don’t send money immediately. They tell people to pay either by credit card or through Western Union.

In some cases, the fraudsters can display the phone number of either CRA or local police on the victim’s caller ID display.

So you get a call you think is a scam…

What should you do? 

  • Hang up immediately! It’s not rude and could protect you.
  • Don’t give out any personal information: identification numbers, passwords or financial information

Who should you contact?

  • Contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 and report the call

When should you tell police? 

  • Only call police if you have given away money to the fraudster who called you. If you haven’t been defrauded, call the Anti-Fraud Centre.
