A man pleaded guilty Friday to the murder of a 25-year-old Calgary man, whose disappearance was originally treated as a missing persons case in February 2014.

Kevin Dalton, 36, admitted to the manslaughter death of Suryan Giama Friday.

Court heard Giama and Dalton were both drug dealers and that Dalton owed Giama money at the time he was killed. When Giama tried to collect the money, Dalton attacked him: punching, kicking and stomping on him. An associate of Dalton then washed Giama, who was unconscious.

Dalton and his associate then loaded Giama into a car and drove him to the Sunalta CTrain station in Calgary, where he was left cold and wet in the vehicle in sub-zero temperatures. Dalton returned an hour later to find Giama had died in the car; he then drove to Morley and dumped Giama’s body in a ravine.

Giama’s remains were found in June 2014, approximately 10 kilometres west of the Morley townsite.

The Crown characterized the incident as a case of self-defence “that went too far.”

The Crown and defence made a joint submission for a three-year jail sentence. Justice Earl Wilson agreed with the submission Friday, and sentenced Dalton to three years. The sentence is concurrent to the sentence he’s now serving for drug trafficking.

Dalton has a significant history of violence with multiple convictions for assault, assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon.
