UPDATE: Body of man who fell through the ice on the Kettle River found

UPDATE — 12:45 p.m. Thursday

RCMP confirm crews have found the body of man who fell through the ice.

Search and rescue volunteers spotted the man’s body once they began clearing ice away in the area where the man was last seen.

An RCMP diver recovered the body, which was located 5.6 metres below the surface.

BC Coroners Service is now investigating this case. Officials are notifying next of kin and the man’s identity is not being revealed at this time.

RCMP have lost hope finding a man alive, but the search resumes. Wednesday afternoon, police witnessed the man losing grip and getting swept under a partially frozen river.

“Given the conditions, he was seen going under…it’s suspected the man has perished,” says media spokesperson Cpl. Dan Moskaluk.

Moskaluk says some of search included canvassing the shore lines and diving into the Kettle River, and search crews are now starting to break up the ice.

The RCMP dive team, Grand Forks fire department and Nelson Search and Rescue are on scene.

The identity of the man is still unknown.

GRAND FORKS–A man has fallen through the ice on the Kettle River near Grand Forks.

RCMP were called to the scene on Highway 3, about five kilometres east of Grand Forks at 2:45 Wednesday afternoon.

Using binoculars, they were able to spot a man clinging to the ice edge before observing him lose his grip and slip under the ice.

Cold water recovery trained Fire Department personnel are searching for the man, with Nelson Search and Rescue being called in to assist.

The Grand Forks RCMP say the man’s identity isn’t known.

Emergency operations closed the highway near the Riviera Motel for about an hour, but it has since re-opened.
