EDMONTON – A man is in hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries after an altercation with Edmonton police.
The call indicated a man was threatening to shoot himself.
When officers arrived on scene, police said they were approached by a 50-year-old man with a weapon. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), which is now investigating the shooting, said the weapon appeared to be a a long-barreled weapon.
During the confrontation, the man was shot by police and taken to hospital with serious injuries requiring surgery. There is no update on his condition.
Neighbours in the area gave conflicting reports as to how many people live in the home – some told Global News there were two residents, others said it was only one.
Bill Aylwin lives across the street and said he was surprised to see the police presence.
“I’ve lived here five years and this is the first time I’ve seen yellow tape. Nothing’s ever happened around here. It’s mind-boggling to say the least,” he said.
Another neighbour, Alice Craig, first noticed the police tape on her way to church Sunday morning. She’s lived in the area for 50 years: “It bothers me in that respect, that it’s not a safe place any more in my opinion. But is there a safe place any more? That’s the thing.”
Investigators were canvassing the neighbourhood on Sunday afternoon. They also brought out a metal detector and combed through the trees in the front yard.
A section of the side-street remained taped off at noon, as well as a few houses.
No EPS members were injured during the incident.
