A cherished gift: Seniors get hundreds of Christmas cards from community members

HALIFAX – It’s something many take for granted this time of year, some don’t even give them anymore. A simple Christmas card.

But for some seniors at the Northwood Centre in Halifax, those Christmas cards are a highlight of their holiday season.

For the past three years the centre has asked the community; schools, daycare centres and businesses, not to forget their residents by sending them Christmas cards. Each holiday season staff, and staff members’ children, go to door to door in the centre delivering the cards.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Eight-six year old Pat Boudreau says she was touched when she got her Christmas card on Wednesday.

“Oh I think it’s special. It’s all I can say it’s a big surprise. I never suspect anything like this to happen to me. It makes me feel happy and good,” she said.

Organizers say more than 5000 cards have been donated to the seniors this year alone.

“They are just like you and I. They want to have a special moment at Christmas time they can treasure,” said Faye LeBlanc, managing director at Northwood.

Resident Vivian Goodall says it’s a moment she will treasure for some time to come.

“You expect your family to bring them, but strangers you don’t expect them to bring them,” said Goodall.

Olive Moir says it brought is smile to her face.

“I think it’s lovely and I’m going to put them up over the Christmas season to let everyone see them.”
