Owners of pit bull that killed Pomeranian charged under animal control act

HALIFAX – The owners of a pit bull that attacked and killed Diamond the Pomeranian on Monday have been charged under the city’s Animal Control act.

Thomas Vaughan and Kassandra Allard-Morin have been charged with having an unlicensed dog, allowing a dog to run at large, and one charge of an animal attack.

Diamond’s owner, Rachelle Coward, said she was letting her two small dogs out before heading to work on Monday morning when a pit bull she did not know chased Diamond into her home, dragged her out of the house and killed her.

“I don’t know how I could be taking her out to pee one minute, and then the next minute, she’s gone,” Coward told Global News on Tuesday.

Police responded to the scene, taking the dog into custody and eventually turning the investigation over to Halifax Regional Municipality Animal Control, which subsequently laid the charges.

The owners are scheduled to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court on Jan. 7.
