Tim Hortons employee accused of throwing hot coffee, Timbits and using racial slur during customer spat

Surveillance footage from a Michigan Tim Hortons appears to show an employee try to assault a customer with hot coffee and the chain’s tiny donuts.

The incident occurred on Oct. 27 at a location on Wayne Road in Westland, Michigan.

Cameras were rolling on a drive-thru window when an unidentified customer allegedly asked a female employee to discard an older, cold cup of java that had been in his vehicle. WDIV reports that she refused. Tempers flared when the customer, in return, refused to accept the fresh coffee.

The released video appears to show a male employee stop the window from closing and throw the fresh, hot coffee at the customer as he drove away. The staff member also appeared to shout something at the customer.

That something, according to the customer’s attorney Majed Moughni, was a racial slur.

“My client was called an Arab, that he should go back to the Middle East…is this what you guys do in the Middle East?” Moughni told an NBC affiliate.

The security footage didn’t record audio.

The customer has admitted, via his attorney, that he returned to throw a coffee and spit in the direction of the employee behind the window. That caused the employee to throw coffee a second time along with what appeared to be a small package of Timbits.

“Charge my client with assault – fine. It’s a misdemeanor,” Moughni added. “But charge the real criminal in this case with felonious assault.”

Global News attempted to contact Tim Hortons about the incident but has not yet received a reply. However, the company did offer the following statement to WDVI:

“Guest safety is of paramount concern to Tim Horton’s. We were aware of the incident in October and the franchisee has taken the appropriate steps to address the matter.”
