Get ready for rare Christmas Day full moon

This year the world will be treated to a full moon on Christmas Day, a rarity. File/Giuseppe Cacace/AFP/Getty Images

The iconic image of Santa and his sleigh passing in front of a full moon will be accurate this year: This will be the first Christmas Day full moon since 1977.

Just think about that: there was no internet, no cellphones, no flat-screen TVs and 8-tracks were still alive. Jimmy Carter was president of the United States — and we had a different Trudeau as prime minister.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

And, as we await the new installment in the Star Wars franchise, 1977 was also the year of the first Star Wars movie, Star Wars: A New Hope.

So this Christmas full moon is indeed rare. So rare, in fact, that the next one doesn’t occur until 2034.

The exact time of the full moon will be at 6:11 a.m. ET. And, in case you’re interested, this month’s full moon is called the Full Cold Moon, according to the Farmer’s Almanac.

Though this full moon is somewhat special, it isn’t a “super moon” (the closest full moon in its monthly cycle). The moon will be closest — at roughly 368,417 km from Earth — on Dec. 21.
