SASKATOON – The force is with the Saskatoon Youth Orchestra (SYO) as it performs its annual Christmas concert Sunday night at the Third Avenue United Church. Sixty-six musicians ages 12 to 25 make up the full orchestra.

Music director Richard Carnegie says this concert will be like no other. It will include electronic dance music and cinema scores from the Star Wars movies.

“It’s kind of a no brainer with the movie coming out so soon and the music is such an integral part of the movie you can’t image Star Wars without the music,” says Carnegie.

Carnegie recommends that if you’ve ever wanted to introduce a young person to orchestral music, this is the concert to come to. There will be a Star Wars costume contest and prizes.

Staying in the theme of space, the SYO will also perform Mason Bates’ Mothership. Audience members will be transported to a space station and listen to non-traditional orchestral instruments like the electric guitar and the electric mandolin.

“You’re going to hear dance beats, not classical dance beats, something like techno music mixed with orchestral music. It sounds very strange but it’s an amazing piece,” says Carnegie.

If you’re a classic lover, not to worry; the Saskatoon Strings will perform six songs including a Waltz, Hallelujah, Finale from Symphony No.2 and Allegro from Concerto Grosso No. 1.
