Eleven-year-old responsible for arsons in northeast Regina

REGINA-An 11-year-old has been linked to a string of arson fires in northeast Regina.

Between Nov. 23 and Nov. 28, Regina Police say there were six suspicious fires in the 400 block of Lorne Street, the 300 block of Toronto Street, the 300 block of St. John Street, the 500 block of Halifax Street and two in the 200 block of Halifax Street.

All the fires appeared to have been intentionally started in garbage and recycle bins, with some of the damage spreading to nearby fences and garages.

As a result of an ongoing investigation, police found an eleven-year-old was responsible for the fires. The child can’t be charged criminally, as the Youth Criminal Justice Act only applies to children aged 12-17.

The child has been referred to the Regina Fire and Protective Services’ Youth Firestarters Education Program and 11UI Initiative, which partners with police, government, school boards and the health region.

Police are also advising residents to put their recycle and garbage containers out only on pickup dates. People can also help prevent fires by removing garbage left near fences, garages and other structures.
