Charges pending after pickup hits pedestrian on Tuesday: police

CALGARY – Charges are now pending against a 59-year-old man in connection with one of two cases where a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle Tuesday night.

On Wednesday, Calgary police said while speed and alcohol are not considered to be factors, charges are pending after a 27-year-old woman was struck in the 2500 block of 32 Street N.E. around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

Police said she was hit by a pickup truck in a crosswalk and that while she originally suffered serious injuries, she had been upgraded to stable condition as of Wednesday morning.

They said the driver remained on scene and was cooperative.

She has since been upgraded to serious condition. The woman was struck by a vehicle at Midlake Boulevard and Bannister Road S.E. just before 5:30 p.m.

Investigators said that 25-year-old woman was in a crosswalk when she was struck. She was found by witnesses lying in the middle of the road. Many who live in the area called it a dangerous intersection.

Police say they are now looking for a dark-coloured pickup truck that will likely have noticeable damage to the front and on the passenger side.

Following the crash, police reminded drivers involved in such an incident to stay on scene.

“It’s not only your lawful duty, but it’s your moral duty,” Staff Sergeant John McCarthy said Tuesday. “You stop and if it’s an accident, you stop and help out.”

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to contact the Police Traffic Section at 403-567-4000, or Crime Stoppers.
