Christmas cash mob set to hit struggling 124 Street this weekend

EDMONTON- It’s possibly the easiest way to get your Christmas shopping done while supporting the struggling businesses along 124 Street.

The 124  Street Business Association along with The Local Good are hosting a “cash mob” this weekend which means everyone who takes part agrees to spend at least 20 bucks at one of the area stores. They get some great deals in return. Organizers are hoping about 1,000 shoppers show up.

The city is even getting in on the fun providing free shuttle service between two park and ride locations (Hawrelak Park & Stadium Station) and providing extra buses in the area on Saturday.

“We want to support great businesses that maybe are going through a difficult period of time,” said Tommy Kalita cash mob organizer.

It’s no secret business in the area hasn’t been great since the closure of the 102 Avenue bridge. Buckled girders kept the bridge from reopening on time. Not to mention the downturn in the economy. This weekend’s cash mob will serve as a Christmas present of sorts for both business owners and shoppers alike.

“Sometimes when you’re struggling, you start to feel a little isolated. So to know that people are out there and still thinking of you with compassion, that’s incredible,” said Alison MacLean, business owner Carbon Environmental Boutique.

The 124 Street Christmas cash mob runs Saturday, Dec. 12 between 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Candy canes and hot chocolate included!
