Caught on Camera: Two alligators fight on Florida golf course

A Florida woman’s golf game turned into an impromptu animal encounter after the fairway was transformed into a boxing ring for a clash of angry alligators.

Lynn Sarels was on the front nine with some friends at the Myakka Pines golf course in Englewood, Florida Saturday, Nov. 28. She says the group had made it to the fourth hole when the game suddenly took a backseat to the gator throw down.

“They were rolling around, biting each other, flipping each other, it was amazing,” Sarels told WFLA News in Florida.

She quickly grabbed her camera, capturing several shots of the alligators biting and grappling with one another. Meanwhile, stunned golfers could only look on in surprise and curiosity.

“I got a little nervous then because I had never seen that before.” Kathy Dee, another witness, told WFLA. “They were rolling around and they were tangling with one another and one was trying to get free.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The one combatant has been identified as “Goliath”, a 12-foot gator that has become something of a local celebrity at Myakka Pines.

This isn’t the first time photos of the mammoth gator have gone viral: in May, Goliath became an internet hit after golfers posted a photo of him chowing down on a turtle near one the course’s water traps.

The other gator, measuring a mere 10 feet in length, has not been identified. As is often the case in most fights, size would end up carrying the day, as the smaller gator was seen limping away from the scene of the battle.

Goliath, meanwhile, was reportedly unhurt.

“Goliath kept control of his territory … strolls back to his pond, apparently uninjured!” Myakka Pines wrote in a post about the clash on their Facebook page.

The only real casualty of the fight: some golfers’ delayed tee-times.

“There was some fellas waiting to tee off and, of course, they had to hold up until [the gators] finished their shenanigans,” Dee said.
