Police dog hacked with machete during illegal gambling raid in Toronto: police

TORONTO — A police service dog is recovering after being attacked by a suspect with a machete during two police raids on illegal gambling operations in Toronto on Monday.

While executing a search warrant at a home located in the Senlac Road and Churchill Avenue area, police said a man ran from the house wielding a large machete and refused to drop the weapon when ordered to do so.

The suspect then allegedly hacked at a police service dog named Lonca, slashing the dog’s neck, before being subdued and arrested. Police seized a large quantity of cash and other evidence at from the home.

Police said Lonca, who is just under two years old, was rushed to an emergency veterinary hospital for treatment and is recovering after receiving several stitches to close his wounds.

Phuoc Dang, 56, of Toronto, has been charged with possession of the proceeds of crime, injuring/wounding an animal and weapons dangerous.

Minh Pho, 55, of Toronto, has been charged with possession of the proceeds of crime.

At the same time, officers executed another search warrant at a home located in the Finch Avenue West and Jane Street area and seized a large quantity of cash and other evidence.

Thi Tran, 52, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with keeping a common gaming or betting house, possession of the proceeds of crime and a lottery scheme.

All three suspects made a court appearance in Toronto on Tuesday to face the allegations against them.
