TransLink users will no longer require paper monthly passes starting in new year

December will be the last month to buy and use your paper monthly transit pass.

Starting Jan. 1, commuters who plan to take transit with a monthly pass will need to get a Compass card and load the pass onto their card.

TransLink says with a monthly pass on the card, commuters won’t have to specify their zones of travel, like they do today, meaning a two-zone monthly pass on Compass is valid for travel across any two zones.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

TransLink spokesperson Jennifer Morland says they are reminding people to tap in and tap out on SkyTrain and SeaBus, and tap in only on buses. Not tapping out could result in additional charges or an “insufficient fare” message on the next trip.

Morland says the switch from paper to loaded passes does not apply to FareSavers just yet.

“It is a big behavioural change,” she says. “We want to make sure that people understand the system and are confident with it.”

In addition, more fare gates will close at most Expo and Millennium Line stations starting this weekend. Currently, Morland says at least one gate is closed at almost all of the stations.

More than 300,000 commuters currently have a Compass card.

Twenty-nine thousand people loaded their Compass card with a monthly pass in November. That number is expected to grow to more than 100,000 by January, according to TransLink.

In October, more than 11.5 million Compass taps were registered.
