Community supports West Kelowna athlete after serious accident

KELOWNA – He’s become one of the top CrossFit competitors in the world but now Cole Bernier is confined to a wheelchair.

It happened after a devastating work-related accident in West Kelowna at the end of September.

He was working on a new house development when suddenly the roof collapsed, trapping him underneath for 30 minutes.

The injuries he sustained were significant. Two vertebrae’s were broken, one lung was punctured and his spinal cord was severely injured.

Saturday at a local CrossFit studio in West Kelowna friends and family gathered to support and raise funds for Bernier and his family.

A Go Fund Me campaign for Bernier is about $100 away from reaching its $20,000 goal. The money will help cover alternative therapies not covered by WorkSafe B.C.

“Life throws a lot of curve balls at you,” said Bernier. “I think everything happens for a reason and you have certain people in your life for a reason and no matter what it could always be worse.”
