LETHBRIDGE – Hundreds of students at Agnes Davidson Elementary School gathered in the gym Tuesday to honour Canada’s veterans before their Remembrance Day holiday.
Though the importance of paying tribute to the veterans was emphasized, the school also seeks to help its students understand the importance of remembering the sacrifice that was made.
“What we want the students to take from this assembly is respect for our veterans,” said Principal Carolle Babin.
Grade 5 students played a big role in the ceremony, which featured a choir, placing of wreaths, a short film and, of course, a moment of silence. The ceremony struck a very personal note for some students.
“My father was a navigator in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, and he was a teacher as well, and so it’s always been important in my teaching career that the students that I work with have an understanding of how important Remembrance Day is,” said music teacher Vaughn Atkinson, who also organized the school’s Remembrance assembly.
Agnes Davidson Elementary School was one of many across the city hold its Remembrance Day ceremony on Tuesday.
