BOGOTA – Former Colombian President Andres Pastrana is calling for a thorough investigation into what led to the crash of small plane minutes before it was scheduled to transport him to a campaign rally.

The twin-engine Beechcraft hurled into a crowded Bogota neighbourhood Sunday shortly after takeoff from the capital’s airport. Six people were killed and eight more injured.

Pastrana along with former Defence Minister Marta Lucia Ramirez were waiting for the plane at a regional airport outside Bogota when the crash took place. The group was scheduled to take the plane to attend a rally in support of Conservative Party candidates running in Sunday’s mayoral and gubernatorial elections.

Witnesses reported hearing loud explosions after the plane fell to the ground. Authorities have yet to offer a possible cause for the crash.
