North Shore Rescue will now have a specialized infrared camera at their disposal to assist in complicated rescues.
Port Metro Vancouver has donated the equipment in a special ceremony on Wednesday.
When required by North Shore Rescue, the camera will be mounted to a helicopter and used as a tool to help locate missing people in challenging terrain.
The camera will be able to locate the heat of an object or person. It has the ability to lock onto a heat source and track it for extended periods of time, without relying exclusively on the human eye.
North Shore Rescue expects to have the camera in operation by January 2016.
Team leader Mike Danks says it is a very valuable piece of equipment that they would not otherwise be able to obtain because of the cost of the device.
“This is going to be our go-to. It is a huge step forward for North Shore Rescue,” says Danks.
He says the camera will be available as a resource to any other search-and-rescue team in the province.
