Assiniboine Park Zoo and animals celebrate Thanksgiving holiday

WINNIPEG — Well it turns out Thanksgiving celebrations aren’t just for humans; the animals at Assiniboine Park Zoo are getting in on the holiday festivities too.

The animals are receiving special pumpkin treat for the holiday long weekend.

From the tigers and polar bears to the monkeys, many of the zoo’s creatures are not just taking bites out of their tasty squash treats, they are playing with them.

Visitors are also getting a treat. The zoo is offering 25 per cent off admission Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

“We are very grateful for this last year and we really want to wish our supporters and the community a special Thanksgiving,” Brian Joseph, director of animal management and conservation said in a news release. “This will be a wonderful event for all ages and it’s a great time of year to see the animals.”

There are a number of daily activities for people to enjoy.

  • Face painting, horse shoes and crafts from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (event tent).
  • Take a photo with Winston the polar bear mascot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (zoo entrance).

Not to be outdone, Hudson the polar bear is having a very special weekend as well. Hudson turned 4 on Oct 11, so until Monday, visitors can also watch him get a daily birthday treat. The first 100 kids to the zoo will also get a free ice cream treat to celebrate.

Staff are asking visitors to support Winnipeg Harvest and donate non-perishable food items at the zoo entrance in lieu of birthday gifts for our polar friend.

The zoo is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
