WATCH: Halifax neighbours use lights, flags in election sign one-upmanship

HALIFAX – Two Halifax neighbours have engaged in a friendly competition to one-up each other’s political campaign lawn sign decorations.

“Definitely my sign’s better, definitely,” said Malcolm Norton with a laugh.

Norton and Allan Robertson, who have lived one house away from each other on Tower Road for two decades, have signs for Liberal Party candidate Andy Fillmore and New Democratic Party candidate Megan Leslie, respectively.

The two added features in response to what the other neighbour added.

Both signs now have flood lights and Christmas lights, which wrap around the borders.

“Why not? Let’s have some fun with life,” said Robertson, who recently added Canadian flags to the top of his sign.

The competition has become the talk of the neighbourhood.

“I just thought Andy Fillmore lived there because the sign was so big and flashy,” said Hillary Madic, who passed through the neighbourhood Thursday morning.

“It kind of gets people thinking about the election more,” said Mitchell Norrie, another passerby, adding he thought the competition was funny.

Norton and Robertson said they’re both done with the competition but are prepared to act should one of them dare to further spruce up a sign.

“I’m not sure I trust him,” said Robertson.

Norton said he could add “a little fluff” to his sign.

“Or he could have flashing strobe lights; that would be kind of interesting. The neighbours might have something to say about that, though,” said Robertson.

But by Thursday afternoon, Robertson had expanded his sign collection and affixed a large pro-NDP placard to his fence. No lights or flags have been added to that sign – yet.

The neighbours said they hope their signs encourage people to get engaged with the election campaign.

“We want everybody to vote,” said Norton.
