University of Lethbridge establishes Josh Burton Memorial Award

LETHBRIDGE – Josh Burton, a 23-year-old southern Alberta man who died in July 2013 after a car accident in Guatemala, will now have a University of Lethbridge music scholarship in his name.

In considering whether to support the U of L scholarship program, Wayne and Jasmine Burton said they recalled their nephew’s love for music.

“We thought it was really fitting to have Josh be recognized in the process because he certainly was a learner,” said Wayne. “He didn’t do a formal university music program, but he was just soaking it up whenever he could, so he fit the role of a life-long learner for sure.”

Wayne, a physician and accomplished inspirational musician, completed medical school at the University of Utah after taking a Bachelor’s for Science at the U of L. He and his wife, Jasmine, who both grew up in southern Alberta, came back from the United States to call Lethbridge home.

Josh’s enthusiasm for music is evident on his YouTube channel where he explained what lit the fire for music in his heart. Burton was also a big part of the Cardston theatre and his younger brother is now following in his footsteps.

“He would express himself so much and I said I wanted to be like that, “ said Aaron Burton. “It made me feel really happy to do what he was doing.”

Josh Burton was on his two-year mission in Guatemala for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints when the vehicle he was riding in went off the road and crashed. He underwent surgery but died on July 22, 2013 following medical complications.
