SUMMERLAND — People of all ages are stocking up on good reads in Summerland as the community’s new public library finally opened its doors on Saturday.

After years of consideration, months of construction and a week-long moving closure, many Summerland residents are thrilled to enjoy the new space.

More than 100 people attended the official opening of what the community librarian says is more than just your average library.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Its evolved into more of a meeting place and an activity centre that’s based on books,” says Sue Kline.

Okanagan Regional Library funded the space, paying about $4.5-million to build the structure. Also pitching in was the Friends of Summerland Library Society.

Through years of fundraising, the group was able to pay for some of the extra touches in the building, such as a special wood and stone wall.

“The wood that is in this library comes from nine different orchards and properties around the town,” says Anne Carter who is the Secretary Treasurer with the society.

The new space is more than twice the size of the old library and Carter says it was a much needed expansion.

“In all age groups we have large readership,” says Carter. “Six thousand users a month come through this library.”

The new library has meeting and study rooms as well as a dedicated space for kids.
