REGINA – A ceremonial flag raising was held outside of the Saskatchewan legislature Thursday to mark International Day of Older Persons.

Demonstrations took place across the country in recognition of the 25th anniversary since the United Nations declared the day.

On hand at the Regina flag raising was Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism President, Robert Wuschenny, who said the day is really about recognizing the valuable contributions seniors have made in the province.

“Sometime there is this sort of attitude, well they’ve been there, they’ve done that. That’s not the case. Our seniors are still vibrant people, they still have contributions to make,” he added.

Health Minister Dustin Duncan was also in attendance and said it’s important to acknowledge what older persons and seniors are adding to society today.

“What we always try to do is balance off the best care that we can for the seniors that are in our care while being mindful of the needs of the seniors and older adults that want to be independent, that can be independent,” he added.
